Halloween is fast approaching and your dog wants in on the fun! I'm sure you've been busy decorating your house, purchasing those nice goodies to hand out to kids and even shopping for costumes for yourself and your kids. Don't forget about your dog(s).
When it comes to pet costumes, believe it or not, there are several options for dogs both big and small. You can find the simplest of things like a collar that lights up - to full piece outfits for your dog! From booties, hats and natural temporary hair colouring to a complete Batman or Superman costume - there are several options available. So have some fun and let Fido have some too.
First, a bit of advice. Always make sure that your pet will be able to move around freely in the costume (what ever it may be). If they can't walk normally or if their vision is obstructed in any way - you should reconsider the outfit. Also, before the big night out, test the costume on your dog and let him/her get used to it for a bit. The best option is to try it on for a short period of time like 5 - 10 minutes. Then take it off and try again a few hours later for a bit longer. If they don't object to having it on then you are in luck. If they start scratching or pawing to get something off you'll know they don't like it.
Where to buy Halloween costumes for dogs
The best place to find a costume is your local pet shop or small dog boutique stores in and around Toronto. Suprisingly enough you may even find them at major clothing retail stores. Old Navy (oldnavy.com) for example, has a selection of pet costumes. Of the major pet stores, Petsmart (petsmart.com) seems to have the largest selection. Some people may find more unique costumes at the local boutique store.
Judith from My Pet Boutique Inc. (mypetboutique.com) told us that the most popular costumes are Batwings, Witches and Devils. Prices are around $19.95 and the store carries items for extra small to extra large dogs. They also carry smaller items like reflective collars and reflective velcro bands for the dogs arms and legs (to keep them visible in the dark).
Paul from Dog Father & Co. (dogfatherandco.com) carries all sizes as well. Costumes range in price around $24.00. Hot items this year are Batman, Superman, Pricess and Pimp.
Lindsay from Bark & Fitz (barkandfitz.com) carries costumes for dogs up to about 40 lbs. This years hot item is the ladybug outfit, prices around $30.00.
