The City of Toronto is proposing regulations for professional dog walkers who take dogs to city parks.
Dog walkers could soon be charged between $100 - $200 per year for a “Dog Walker License” and could also be required to have $1 million worth of liability coverage.
In addition to regulating the dog walker business, the city hopes to limit the number of dogs professional Dog Walkers will take to parks. According to the city, the annual licensing fee will go towards the city’s budget for park beautification, citing that when many dogs attend a park all at once the ground (grass) tends to get ruffed up. The City is also proposing restrictions on the amount of dogs that would be allowed to attend parks with a dog walker.
In addition, dog walkers who have unlicenced dogs, could be fined. (for those of you who don’t know, you are required by law to have your dog licensed with the city).
Some people feel this new policy could help keep city parks clean and a more enjoyable environment for other dog owners and other city residents. Dog walkers on the other hand feel that they should not be the target for fined dogs that are not licenced.
Feedback provided by the dog walkers will be submitted to Toronto’s parks and recreation department on July 4.
The issue will go before city council on July 16.
